i was craving for putu piring after watching Ho Chiak on Sunday evening. not a good idea cos they are closed on Sunday!
next day, mami and i were (conveniently) in the vicinity to run errand and it’s almost half past six when we’re done, speaking of righttt timing. suggested us to pullover to have some putu piring before heading home.
spotting the humble stall might require some effort. i relied on Waze and it led me to the wrong unit =.=. it wasn’t my first time there, but i am completely hopeless when it comes to direction. manatau sei Waze is as unreliable as me, tsk.
stopped by road and approached a fruit vendor, “terus pergi lagik! kat depan je”
apparently it’s just 200 m ahead. should you’re lost, direct your GPS to Tengkera Police Station and this putu piring is just around the corner.
don’t expect to see a shop though, the business is done at the corridor of their humble den.
beside selling putu piring, there’s curry powder, gula melaka and belacan which you can bring home for yourself or buy them as souvenirs to your loved ones. forgot to ask if it’s their own recipe :/
i was the second customer of the day!
you’re required to grab the number and wait till your number is called. since there’ no crowd when i arrived, there’s no need for that.
the stall are manned by three person, which i believe is a husband and wifey plus a relative. the uncle looking at my camera was actually cuing me that mine’s ready!
“wait ar uncle!”
*continues to snap away*
the uncle in dark shade shirt fills up the metal disk with rice flour and gula Melaka and skillfully shaped it into a “piring” shape using spatula.
the aunty will then steam it on the steamer. the cloth prevents the cake to fall into steamer as well as to retain the moisture.
she checks on them often and once it’s cooked she will transfer it to the other uncle.
which he sprinkles shredded coconut..
lastly, served it on a banana leaf before packing into polystyrene box.
happily hopped to car with a box of putu piring on my hand, like how a lil’ girl happily bouncing with a lollipop in her hand.
the box couldn’t contain the aroma and it swiftly filled up our car and seriously who can resist it?
so we had to stop by the road and unboxed it. such appealing rice cake huh! beautifully bruised with gula Melaka.
the ratio of rice flour and gula Melaka is perfecto! the sweetness is pleasant, even mami who prefers her beverage kosong finds it acceptable.
the putu piring is so fluffily soft that it instantly disintegrates in your mouth and you would subconsciously go hmmmmm. the gula Melaka flavor is robust and just burst into your mouth. every mouth is soooo satisfying.
it’s true that when Gary, the host of Ho Chiak commented 吃了会有幸福的感觉！especially when the putu piring is still warm.
the putu piring is lil’ pricey at RM 1 per piece, however, it’s worth every penny as the gula Melaka stuffed within is of good quality and in generous amount!
