hallo Anteaders! how’s your CNY? mine has been great hence the absence on virtual world XD. okie, holiday over, back to work, by work i mean blogging and thesis :/.
so, here’s the first post of horse year…
January 23rd, 2014 [Thursday]
i guess this Sisters’ Curry Mee is arguably the most famous curry mee in Penang now. i have always wanted to try it but it’s located quite far away from where i stay and the traffic in the morning is horrible, i heard.
but my labmates, so nice of them to suggest this as brekkie when i was in Penang last month! they are my dedicate makan buddies, dedicate cos woke up at 7am for a bowl of curry mee and willingly to stuck in jam. the jam was mild though as we were driving at opposite direction XD.
this humble curry mee stall is manned by two sisters, i guess it’s appropriate to address them as popo (or ah ma) :/. the popo in lighter shade clothing is Younger Popo while the other popo in darker floral clothing is Not So Young Popo. and when i was there that morning, there’s an aunty helping out at the stall too.
there’s no proper table setting for the ‘stall’, all the ingredients/condiments prepared in silverware are laid out on the ground around them. and both popos served us sitting on a stool.
you might overlook this stall as it’s not located on the main street of the morning market. it’s at an alley off Jalan Paya Terubong where Methodist Church is situated. and also cos this stall is not at your eye level. you need to look down to be able to spot this stall.
you may opt to sit on the stools in front of the stall or at the tables beside or opposite the stall. don’t expect popos to serve you ar, it’s all self-service here. “enjoy first, pay later”, the popos gladly allow.
beside curry mee, they offer fried mee/meehoon to be served with their signature sambal!
my piping hot bowl of curry mee! laden with coagulated blood, tofu puff, bean sprout, cuttlefish and sambal.
okay this was mine. sans blood cubes.
stirred in the sambal and i got a punch in my mouth. it was fiery! my type of instant stimulant! everyone of us were panting in sweat and gulped down the liang teh peng by the end of our meal. i like that it’s not too santan-y and creamy to my liking. the curry soup is flavourful.
somebuddy told me that it’s mediocre, i thought it’s decent! it’s different from the usual curry mee you find in Penang, with the addition of cuttlefish. i like this version more to be honest. i’m gonna bring my family here next time.
and also the popos have been preparing the soup base (and all of the other condiments) with charcoal since beginning, so the 火候 is really gao :D.
for the good 30 minutes i was there, i couldn’t get a glimpse of how Not So Young Popo’s looks like, cos she’s always crouching forward, busy serving. before i left, i walk to the back of the stall, attempt to snap from different angle, suddenly she looked up and smiled, averted shyly “eh she’s taking (my) photo.”
and that made my day.
oh the curry mee too.
