{Penang} Goku Raku Ramen @ Gurney Paragon

*update: Goku Ramen Ramen has just rebrand to Edo Ramen @ Gurney Paragon! everything still remains the same though.

Gurney Paragon is a fairly new premier shopping mall in Penang, located along Gurney Drive, right next to G Hotel & Gurney Plaza.

“Gurney Paragon is built around and inspired by the former St. Joseph’s Novitiate which converted into St. Jo’s, an area for stylish restaurants and cafes steeped in the architecture of Penang’s heritage.” (source)

when Jerine told me St Jo’s (the beige establishment)  was actually her alma mater, i got the shock of the year. it’s such a classic beautiful colonial architecture! i is jeles. why didn’t my school looks like that huh Huh HUH! St Jo’s houses many restaurants now, namely ben’s, Meet Fresh, Wong Kok Char Chan Teng, Italiannies, TGI Friday’s, and many more. of course there’s MORE restaurant and cafe IN the mall like Pasta Zanmai and Brown Pocket! yala i still haven’t tried Sushi Zanmai :/

during my most recent trip to Penang (last week), i met up with Ken for lunchy at Goku Raku Ramen! he’s so femes now, i had to make appointment a month in advance pfft.

March 19th, 2014 [Wednesday]

locating Goku Raku Ramen is easy breezy, it is positioned just opposite of ben’s, or beside Meet Fresh. and as the name suggests, it’s a Japanese restaurant specializing in ramen!

it wasn’t my first visit to Goku Raku Ramen. i had been to the outlet in Mid Valley and i remember i loved their broth. so it’s good to reminiscing it with another Ken this time LOL.

this outlet will be revamping their menu on the 7th April. their ramen will be served in one standard size (formerly known as small) and their price has been greatly reduced! and what’s shown below is from the new menu ar!

Ultimate Tonkotsu Ramen | RM 14.90

ramen topped with homemade char siew, spring onion (ewww), seaweed, siubak choi, Japanese fish cake, corn kernels, and a tamago!

you have the choices of original, shoyu and miso for the soup. we chose the original one which was creamy and flavourful.  i find it a lil’ amusing with the bok choy (小白菜) though. and the char siew served in ramen wasn’t as smoky as the Aburi Char Siew in background!

these slices of char siew (standard size would be 5 slices) were slightly charred and had the robust smoky flavour, akin to bacon but sans the saltiness. the meat almost melted in my mouth! Ken doesn’t really take pork so i gladly walloped ALL ho ho ho. i shoved the smelly grasses to him, of course.

Black Ramen | RM 15.90

we also had Black Ramen. basically the soup base and the toppings are the same as Ultimate Tonkotsu, but an extra condiment is added in, black garlic oil, which contributes to the name!

Ultimate Tokyo Ramen | RM 8.90

i call this the minimalist. ramen with only corn kernels, bok choy, and char siew (okie, fine and ewww spring onion) as toppings, drenched in clear shoyu soup base. for this ramen, you may choose your soup base from the three options. we opted shoyu soup base which was on the bland side.

oh did i mention that the corn kernels were really sweeeeet? must be sweet corn variety lol. i trained my chopstick skill by kiapping one kernel by one kernel.

among three ramen, our favouritest would be Black Ramen, Ultimate Tonkotsu Ramen and Ultimate Tokyo Ramen, in that order.

the ramen served was al dente, not too soft nor too hard, just right to my liking! even though we took some time to photograph, the mee didn’t end up mushy-ish!

their tamago was perfectly done too! soft egg white encasing fragile runny yolk!

Utsunomiya Yaki Gyoza (3 pieces)| RM 5.90

that was exactly how your pan-fried dumpling would be served! you have to break the thin sheet to separate each morsel. well not exactly morsel but you get the drift.

dumpling was stuffed with mince meat and loads of chives ewww. i had to dip a lot of vinegar to camouflage the smelly grass. arghhh.

Utsunomiya Sui Gyoza | RM 5.90

you may have the gyoza blanched too! whichever that suits your taste. i personally prefer pan-fried cos the chives flavour wasn’t that dense. i let Ken handled the gyozas while i stuffed myself with allll the char siew *burpsss*

fried garlic (to Ken’s delight!) and marinated ginger are provided at your disposal.

all in all, Goku Raku Ramen serves delectable ramen variety! with the new menu and pricing, ramen is far more affordable now, yet no, quality isn’t compromised!

Guess what? I just passed by Goku Raku Ramen at Paradigm Mall just now and here you blogged about this restaurant. LOL! Yummy food, but I don’t remember the price is this cheap. (I mean it’s not cheap, but cheaper than last time). Did they change the pricing?
