tucked away in a corner of Kota Laksamana, diagonal opposite of the notorious Asam Pedas (which i think is overrated, more like it’s Masin Pedas, really) is a fusion Japanese Restaurant founded by a Husband-&-Wife Tag Team, where the husband in charge in the kitchen while the wifey do the pr cum cashier job. both of them are experienced in dealing Japanese food and until very recently (barely two months in local f&b scene) that they decided to reside permanently in Malacca and came up with Unzen Yoshoku!

Yoshoku literally means westenized Japanese cuisine. this is apparent on their limited but concise menu. it’s unconventional to have lasagna in a Japanese restaurant, so is the al fresco dining area. yes it’s not equipped with air-conditioner. thanks goodness the aeration of the space is really good, we could feel the breeze caressing our cheeks while chomping down our food. it’s very comfortable even my fussy datin mami wasn’t complaining at all! it only opens after 5pm when the heat is toned down.

we only sampled a few of their signature dishes to satiate my Japanese’s craving. the thickly-sliced tuna sashimi wrapped with seaweed was slightly seared, gave the soft chewy flesh a lil’ of crunch. though my cinapek daddy finds it too raw *facepalm*. i gladly noshed them down no problemo! it’s also my first time seeing grilled mushroom in a Jap restaurant. seeing that my parents couldn’t enjoy the first dish, i shoved the morsels to them. by the time i headed back to my seat after photographing, the dainty morsels were gone. if they like it, i guess it’s worth ordering. the soft, fluffy and moist lasagna is certainly a must-order for pasta-lover! it somehow reminded me the scrambled egg we had in Hong Kong.

of course i had to order some gohan (rice) for cinapek XD. we sampled the curry set which comes with chawanmushi, potato salad, crispy fried chicken and most importantly, japanese rice. i think we almost drenched the chicken and rice with the curry sauce. Japanese curry is so mild that even kiddo can have it!

we ended the pre-dinner with an intense dessert, a superbly chocolatey Chocolate Fondant served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. my only gripe was that the portion is too small!

    Doesn’t look like a Japanese restaurant.
